Junior Athletics Day |
Thank you all for coming along and supporting your child and St Albans school at our Junior Athletics Day. Thank you to those parents who captured some photos of the children along the way! :)

Grandparents Day
Thank you to all our Grandparents who joined in our morning activities last Thursday. We thoroughly enjoyed your company and it was great for us to share with you a little bit of what we do at school. I bet things have changed a lot since you were at school! :)
Thank you Keith Frankish for coming to school to share with Team Lightning your 13 month experience in Antarctica whilst working. The children learnt a lot and were left pondering plenty of questions.
On Tuesday, Craig Smith came to school and shared with us his stories and songs. Here is one featured below. The Wonkey Donkey.
Term 4 begins...
This term our topic focus is 'I like to move it, move it'. We will be getting active in many different ways, for example; athletics, swimming, fitness, singing. The photos below show our SOLO ignition we completed on Monday as a team. This is where we use a describe map and the children are shown a set of photos and are asked first, what they can see, secondly, what they are thinking about from photos/idea and thirdly, anything they might be wondering about related to the topic/photos. We came up with so many ideas! This is on display in the room 6/7 cloak bay.
Thank you all for another amazing term of learning & fun!
I can't believe we are finishing term 3 already! The children and myself have learnt so much together!
Have a lovely holiday, enjoy lots of family time, have fun, stay safe and I look forward to seeing you return in term 4 and hearing about the amazing things you get up to!

'The Missing Mollymawk'
We did it! Such a lovely bunch of Tuataras lounging on the rock. You are all amazing and everyone is so proud of your efforts! Well done room 6! :)
Learning about measurement in maths
Sneeeeeeeeak peak!
Look at the love our children have for their dads, mums, special people in their life! Happy (insert special person's name) Day! :) We appreciate all that you do for us!
Some of our latest work :)
Discovery: featuring the woodwork construction table & Joshua the Tuatara.
Today we were lucky enough to see the show of 'Maui and the sun'. The famous Tuatara appeared! It may have given us ideas to represent the head and tail for our costumes!
On Thursday afternoon Team Lightning and Team Star came together to kick off our 'Showcase Ignition'. This was very successful and a nice way to begin things as a whole team. We have used the SOLO model of 'See, Think, Wonder' which you will notice in the classrooms cloak bay. The SOLO tool has been used in this case, as all teacher have had Professional Development around this area. It is a very clear way of showing children how to display their ideas and develop these further.
Drum roll please........here we have 1st- Archie McCormick, 2nd- Trey Shepherd and 3rd- Daisy Makin from the poetry competition on Friday. Well done to everyone for getting up in front of the class and parents to deliver their poem. Super proud of you all! :)
Discovery week 2
Willowbank Wildlife Reserve
On Thursday the year 0/1 team lucked out with a gorgeous morning for our trip to Willowbank. With only 12 room 6 children and a very excited Miss Geerling (for her first visit to Willowbank) we set of early by bus and arrived ready to go! The day was broken down into 3 parts. First we explored Heritage New Zealand where we saw the farm animals, followed by morning tea. Secondly, we were lucky enough to have Nick (Neaves dad) working in the Native New Zealand area. He held the Tuatara for us. Some of us touched it! Tuatara in maori means- 'spikey back'. We even saw some kiwi running around in the enclosure. That was pretty incredible! After lunch we walked around Natural New Zealand, finishing off with the HUGE eels! This was defiantly a hit with the kids!
Holidaaaaaaays!
Check out the fun we all had during the school holidays! I love seeing the children doing things outside of the classroom with their friends and family. Thank you for sharing :)
Archie went skiing in Tekapo where he participated in ski school for 3 days. Looks like you dressed for the occasion Archie! Here is Daisy celebrating her 6th birthday with her room 6 friends. I love the smiles in this photo! Mmmm... the cake looks yummy too! Lucas spent a day in Akaroa hanging out with his older sister Emily. He also enjoyed a plane trip to Auckland. Woweee! As for Harry... he began his school holidays early, overseas. I suspect a highlight for Harry was visiting the Batu caves in the city of Malaka, Malaysia. Stunning photos! Harry made some monkey friends at the caves too! A gorgeous picture of Neave with Mum and Elliot (Dad's taking the picture I'm guessing) at the top of Conical Hill, following a morning in the hot pools. Trey took a trip with his dog Roofa to Arthurs Pass, then too Greymouth and up to see the Pancakes rocks! Woweee! Fun-filled holidays! |
Casting magic with worms!
Despite being a colder day, the children (and parents) thoroughly enjoyed learning about worms and making their own worm farm. They will bring these home and feed their worms to breed more babies.
Did you know?... One worm egg will produce 5 baby worms.
How many hearts do you think a worm has? Ask your little person for the answer :)
The museum was also a hit and the children loved exploring and answering our museum quiz. with our wonderful parent helpers.
Our stalactites grew and grew! How do you remember which is which between a stalactite and a stalagmite?
We know the answer!
Stalactites- hold on tight to the roof of the cave and form downwards.
Stalagmites- start from the bottom and might reach the top of the cave.

Look at this crazy bunch of weird and wacky hair do's and outfits! Aren't they adorable!
I wonder... Team Lightening have thoroughly enjoyed learning about caves and are very knowledgeable! Our own indoor cave has been such a hit with the kids!
Matariki - Maori New Year - Early July
On Thursday we read a story and talked about why the Maori celebrate Matariki. Matariki is a group of seven stars, sometimes called 'The Seven Sisters' that are visible in our skies from late May - early June.

Caves
What do you know about our caves in New Zealand? How about you ask your young one? Maybe they can tell you what they know... Here are our modelled clay caves alongside our Cave reports.

There is always a busy feel about Fridays! Lots of fun is lots of work! :) Yummy Marshmallow Biscuits were eaten by many on Friday! :) Mhmmmm...
Here is a variety of photos- in no particular order of some of the work we have done across the week. Balloon Octopus in Discovery, Shape Monsters in Math, Tree collage and our very colourful autumn trees have grown in the classroom!
We have lots of fun being Team Lightning... While we all took turns making parts of our cave...we got stuck into all sorts of activities this afternoon. Watch our cave come alive in our art bay! :)
This art work took a while to complete as there were a few steps to it! Hence why I have not managed to snap everyone on camera! You can see us completing step two below...the finished products are in class. Firstly we dyed the A3 paper blue, then we used a straw and black paint to make our tree by blowing through the straw (this was tricky!). Lastly, we used collage to make the leaves of our tree! Waa-lah!
Caves
Check out our Team Lightning combined facts we already know about caves...our explanations of why, using the word 'because'... and our wonderings about Caves.
Incoming Update...

My Mum makes... my bed, me happy, my good dinner
My Mum loves... daddy, me, coffee, ice cream
My Mum always... dresses pretty when she goes out, wears lipstick, hugs me
My Mum is... kind, nice, pretty.

Discovery is soooo much fun on Fridays! Rooms 6, 7, 8 and now 9 all come together... :) We give out 'Discovery Stars' for children who show the value of the week. Today's was 'Community'. We had so many activities like... Construction, Dress-ups, Making playdough, Mother's Day Card making, Tree painting. We had fun. Here is a small dose of snaps I managed to get with sticky play dough hands! :)
Attention Parents/Caregivers: Do you have any old and unwanted magazines (National Geographic, Animal Planet type magazines) you don't need anymore? It would be much appreciated if you donated them to us! We can use these as part of understanding our topic of 'Our Big Playground' as well as great writing inspirations.
Junior Park Explorers
Today we had a great time at the Botanical Gardens. The leaders that took us were great with the kids, they shared a wide range of knowledge with us and their practical, interactive activities were a hit!
Here is a challenge for you- Ask your child tonight 3 things they learnt today! See what they can tell you.

Yesterday we read 'Grandad's Medals' which lead to some great ANZAC discussion. We made our own medals and pinned them to our chests. We were very proud marching around the classroom to some music.
YAY! I have made it work! :)

On Wednesday (April 1st) we are having a shared lunch celebration with Room 7. Please bring a plate of finger food to share with us! :)
The Marae
On Wednesday we walked with Room 6, 8 and 27 to Rehua Marae. The morning was enjoyed by all. There were many Maori stories shared, some singing too. We drew pictures of the inside maori patterns and designs and not to mention a small something to eat. (The children won't forget this part). The children were well behaved, as this was mentioned on more than one occasion by the elders. Well done team!
Ka pai. Here we all are below :)
Here is our wonderful reflection and Maori art following our visit. Beautiful work everyone!
This week we tested some of our senses and thought of some awesome descriptive words for our writing.
Monday- Sour Skittle
Tuesday- Popcorn
Wednesday- Pineapple
Below are our charts full of descriptive words!
Popcorn!
I like my popcorn because it tastes like melted butter. It was a little salty too. Some of us even thought it was sweet. Our popcorn is warm and chunky. Miss Geerling thinks it looks like clouds. It looks buttery and fluffy. Our room smells like butter. Yummy!

I just had to share this photo of Josh who is proud as punch about his rather large potato chip. He proceeded to say "Miss Geerling, look how big this chip is, it's like a surf board!" Woah! So cool!
Tip of the day: When you have some spare time after school or in the weekends, take your child to the park and let them swing on the monkey bars. This is great for muscle development and strengthening their upper body. This will help with posture when sitting at a desk, and help with holding pencils. In effect this will help improve their writing. Amazing!
We did some of this today during fitness! Look at us go! :)

On Monday your child will bring home a sheet of words linked to their reading level. Please encourage your child to become familiar with these as they will come across these words in their reading books. Talk about the first sounds of each word together and what they can hear. Encourage them to have a go! You might like to extend them by writing the words too!
(It is up to you how you choose to work it, but please help your child to learn these words as they will come across these regularly).
Awesome! :)
Look at our amazing class of 'Initiative Bears', they did a great job leading assembly today and showing the Year One team what using your initiative is all about! :) Keep up the great work Room 6!

Do I have any wonderful parent out there who would be avaliable on a Friday morning to put our reading books back into the resource room? If you have not done this before, not a worry, you will be shown how things are run in there. :) Please let me know if that sounds like you!
Check out the smiles on these faces! :) We had fun making and playing with 'bouncing, rolling bubbles' today! It was super fun! We wrote about our bubble making afterwards! Be sure to check out our bubble fun on the classroom walls soon! :)
Here are some photos of Room 6 and their first 'ME' picture Day 1! Miss Geerling took these photos on her phone (as we didn't yet have our 'classroom camera') therefore the pictures are sideways. My apologies! I have tried to change this but there is no tool I can see on this site to do so (will ask another teacher for help, and switch to the classroom camera!) Lesson learnt! :) Happy week One Room 6! GREAT WORK! :)
